I recommend setting up a blog website using WordPress. There are two versions, one is free (WordPress.com) and the other is self hosted (WordPress.org).
What does this mean? It means that if you want to own your content, enable e-Commerce (shopping cart or paypal) on your site, have additional features (widgets and plug-in’s), customize the themes and more. In my opinion, you are better off paying for a hosting account like Bluehost or Gatorhost, upload/install a WordPress theme, configure the back-end with appropriate plug-in’s and widgets, and get started with crafting your posts.
You can hire someone ($200-$1500) to help you with the basic installation, and design your header, help you configure/upload the appropriate plug-in’s and widgets so your site is sharable and socialized; add widget codes such as a newsletter sign up box (as your call to action), set up some type of carousel that showcases photos or PowerPoint slides; or embed a video.
You want your blog posts to have a long lasting shelf life, here are ways to attract readers to your website:
- Schedule your blog posts to feed into Twitter, Facebook Page(s), and Linkedin relevant groups
- I recommend that you use Hootsuite to schedule your posts to Twitter, Linkedin relevant groups
- Change the headlines so you can re-share your blogs more than once a day
- Create a social profile on these sites: Digg, Delicious, Stumbleupon, Reddit, Serpd, G+ , Newsvine.
- I recommend creating a profile on OnlyWire which is a bookmark/syndication tool for $13.00/month
- After you create your profiles on the above mentioned social sites, add the user id and pass codes to the Services tab in OnlyWire.
- Download the Onlywire Submitter tool to your desktop so that it runs on the back-end of your computer; either use your RSS URL feed to feed fresh content from your website to bookmark sites or install the OnlyWire for WordPress plugin.
- OnlyWire will then syndicate and publish your fresh blog post to the bookmark sites as soon as you publish your blog, giving more people access to your blogs.
- Bonus Tip: Most bloggers forget to do this: Submit your blog URL and RSS Feed to Alltop and select appropriate category that way people have a chance to find your blog and the more often you blog, over time you will gain new followers and fans.
- Find niche sites to syndicate your content to – that way you are putting your content in front of your ideal audience (and don’t forget to have a call to action at the end of your blog post)
- Set up RSS Graffiti to automate fresh blog posts to Facebook page. But you might be better off posting manually so that it appears in the news feed.
